Whirligigs…The Folk Art of North Carolina

Wilson has the Largest Collection of Whirligigs in the World!

The Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park & Museum features 16 of the late Vollis Simpson’s artworks and is located in Historic Downtown Wilson at the corner of South/Douglas and Goldsboro Streets. A total of 31 whirligigs will bew featured in the 2-acre park upon its completion! Vollis Simpson’s work is also displayed at the Wilson Rose Garden, the Hickory Grove Park and throughout downtown Wilson street corners.

Simpson’s welded and painted constructions are monumental in scale and are exhibited at The North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, NC, The High Museum of Art in Atlanta, GA, The Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore, MD at the inner harbor, as well as in Russia, London, California, Canada and New Vollis Simpson Whirligig Park.

Simpson has been featured in several publications, including The New York Times, Sign and Symbol, People, Newsweek, Time Magazine, American Style, Southern Living, Garden & Gun, Readers Digest and others. He has also been featured in several books. He was honored by the Governor with the prestigious North Carolina Award in 2011. Vollis Simpson passed away in 2013.
